5. (2 yellow sc, 1 green sc)x5, 1 yellow sc (16)
In the next round the stitches in brackets are to be repeated 4 times

6. 2 yellow sc, (2 green sc, 1 yellow sc)x4, 2 green sc (16)
Now you will just be crocheting with your minty green yarn but dont forget to tie off the yellow tails and weave them in!

7-8. Sc in each st  (16) [2 rounds]

Slst and tie off, leaving a short tail. Repeat these steps to make 3 more legs and then put them to the side

Body

In minty green

2. Inc in each st (12)

3. Inc, sc, repeat around (18)

4. Inc, 2sc, repeat around (24)

5. Inc, 3sc, repeat around (30)
In the next round you will be adding in the legs. When it says to crochet through the leg and the body, you will need to insert your hook into leg and then into the body to make your single crochet
The sides of the body are the sides with 5sc between the legs.
The front and back is the the sides with 4sc between the legs.
You may want to put a stitch marker in the front so that its easier to tell later on
6. 4sc, 3sc through leg and body , 5sc, 3sc through leg and body, 4sc, 3sc through leg and body, 5sc, 3sc through leg and body (30)
In the next round you will be crocheting around the outside of the legs. Do NOT crochet into the 3sc joining the leg to the body from the last round

13. Blo, slst in each st (62)

14. Blo, sc in each st (62)

15. Sc in each st (62)

Slst and tie off, dont forget to weave in your tail
For the black stripe across the shell you want to make a chain and then sc into it. I dont want to give you an exact chain number as this can change depending on yarn size, tension etc. but you want it to reach from one side of the shell to the other (only the brown part), going across the centre.

Chin

In light yellow

1. 6sc in mr (6)

Round 2 is not a full round and after round 2 you will be working in rows. I personally don't use a chain for turning to give a smoother edge

2. 4inc (8)
The stitches in brackets in the next 4 rounds are to be repeated 3 times

You will be leaving the very last stitch of each row unworked

3. Turn, (inc, sc)x3, inc (11)

4. Turn, (inc, 2sc)x3, Inc,  (14)

5. Turn, (inc, 3sc)x3, inc,  (17)

6. Turn, (inc, 4sc)x3, inc, (20)
You will only be crocheting in half of the next row. The chin now splits into 2 parts and in the next 4 rows, you will be finishing one side of the chin

7. Turn, inc, 8sc (10)

In the next round you need to make 1 chain after turning and then skip the first stitch of the row

8. Turn, ch1, skip 1st, 8sc, leave the last st unworked (8)

9. Turn, inc, 7sc (9)

In the next round you need to make 1 chain after turning and then skip the first stitch of the row

10. Turn, ch1, skip 1st, 7sc, leave the last st unworked (7)

Tie off
You will now be starting the other side of the chin
Start by counting 10 along from middle
Tie a slip knot then insert your hook in the 10th st and start from here

1. Inc, 8sc, leave last st unworked (10)

2. Turn, ch1, skip, 8sc, leave the last st unworked (8)

3. Turn, inc, 7sc (9)

4. Turn, ch1, skip, 7sc, leave the last st unworked (7) DO NOT tie off
Next you are going to turn and 7sc but instead of stopping at the end of the row you are going to continue crocheting around the entire edge of the chin. On each corner you should make an increase to make it a bit sharper. On the bottom of the 'V' for the mouth, make a slst
Now you need to turn your work and crochet back along the long straight edge only (this is the bottom of the chin) but you are going to dec 3 times. I cant give an exact stitch count as the number of stitches along this edge may vary from person to person, but see photo for a rough idea where to make the decreases
Flip and sc along the edge again but decrease 2 twice this time, see photo for rough idea where to make decreases
Tie off of leave a tail long enough for sewing

Round Bits x2 (on the sides of the chin)

In light yellow

1. 6sc in mr (6)

2. Inc in each st (12)

3. Inc, sc, repeat around (18)

4. Sc in each st (18)

Slst and tie off, leave a long tail for sewing

Brown sprout

You are going to start by making the base of the sprout, the bit that you attach to Turtwigs head
To start you will need to make 5 triangles (seperately) and then you will crochet them together

For the triangles, you will be working in rows

In brown

1. Ch2

2. Inc in 1st ch (2)

3. Turn, Inc, sc (3)

4. Turn, Inc, 2sc (4)
Tie off and repeat these steps to make 4 more but DON'T tie off last one. After making the last one, move on to row 5

In row 5 you are going to link all of the triangles together by crocheting along the top of them all

5. Flip the triangle you are on and 4sc, but now you are going to add in the next triangle by crocheting 4sc along the top of it and then repeat this with all of the triangles. There should be 20sc altogether

Now you want to link the 2 ends together with a sc, turning it into a round. From here onwards, you will be working in rounds

6. Dec, 2sc, repeat around (15)
7. Dec, sc, repeat around (10)

In the next round you will be working in the front loop only

8. Flo, sc in each st (10)

9. Dec, 8sc (9)

10. 4sc, dec, 3sc (8)

11. Dec, 6sc (7)

12. 3sc, dec, 2sc (6)

13-14. Sc in each st (6) [2 rounds]

15. Dec, 4sc (5)

16. Sc in each st (5)
Slst, tie of, close up and stuff the stem

Now you want to crochet around the edge of the bottom of the sprout to give it a clean, smooth edge

Tie a slip knot and then insert your hook into one of the inner points (see white arrow in photo) and slst, sc all the way around the outer edge but in each outer point make an inc

Leaves x2

In green

1. 6sc in mr (6)

2. Sc in each st (6)

3. Inc, sc, repeat around (9)

4. Sc in each st (9)

6. Inc, 2sc, repeat around (12)

7-8. Sc in each st (12) [2 rounds]

9. 5dec, slst, leave last stitch unworked (7)

Tie off, close up and leave a tail long enough for sewing. You don't stuff the leaves

Assembly

Start by adding the shell to the body. See photo for reference, you want the shell to be pulled backwards slightly so its lower at the back and higher at the front.

Use pins or long needles to hold  in place and then flip the black edge up so you can see the back loops of round 11. This is where you are going to sew the shell onto the body

Next you want to add the sprout to Turtwigs head. You want to place it right in the centre at the top of his head. I tend to make one of the spikes line up with the centre of his face

Pin down and then sew it in place

Then add the yellow chin. You want the 'V' of his mouth to be in line with the spike of the sprout that points down the centre of the face. The top edge of the chin should line up roughly between round 8 and 9

If you want, you can add a little extra detail at the mouth but this bit can be fiddly!

In minty green, tie a slip knot on your hook and insert it in the top right corner of the 'V'. Slip stitch down to the base of the 'V' then back up to the other corner before tying off

Now add on the round sides of the chin (you do want these to be stuffed). You want the top of the round bit to sit roughly 4 rounds up from the chin and sitting back slightly from the back of the chin, see photo for placement

To attach the head to the body you will want to use some long pins to hold it on place. It might take a bit of playing around to get the position right but you want the top of the yellow round bits to roughly line up with the top of the shell.

When looking at him straight on, you should still be able to see most of his front legs. See photo to help with placement

Then you want to add your black stripe to the shell. It should reach from one side of the shell to the other (the brown bit only) and it should cross right over the centre of the shell. Pin it and then sew it in place

Now you need to add the 2 leaves to the top of the sprout. The bottom of the leaves should should line up with the middle of the sprout and should be pointing upwards

The final part is adding the eyes and the nostrils

You can make the eyes in whatever way you prefer (felt, fabric etc) but I personally use felt and then sew them on. You can see my photo for placement of the eyes

And for the nostrils I use a cotton 8/8 yarn and make 2 little slants ( \   / ) 1 stitch tall and roughly 3 stitches apart. They should be roughly in line with the middle of the eyes, see photo

You should now have a finished Turtwig
